The Eco-Care Group…

..came into existence in 2006 as a direct response to a diocesan conference on global warming, at the end of which we were challenged both as individuals and as churches to go away and consider what action we might take on environmental issues.  (This overlaps trade and justice issues too.)  The bishop pointed out we should not just demand policies of our government, but embark on necessary changes ourselves.  We have a Christian responsibility to take care of our planet and to consider what state we want to leave it in for future generations.

The Holy Saviour’s group meets roughly once a month and over the four years since it began has worked hard in a whole variety of ways, to raise awareness and also be active in environmental issues.

Meetings are informal, but purposeful, and have covered a wide range of topics from ethical banking to recycling computers to offsetting carbon emissions.  They are always very sociable occasions too!

The only requirement of members is that they are interested and willing to be involved.  Do telephone the vicarage (0191 257 1636) if you would like to join in.

Fairtrade Fortnight - February 27th till March 11th (ie March 4th). That focus will be both during our worship and also at coffee-time. at least one of the ingredients is fairly-traded. (It’s not possible to see that they all are!)

Year by year the Fairtrade logo is becoming more familiar to us and more frequently to be seen when we do our regular shopping. Yes, to choose Fairtrade goods may sometimes cost a bit more, but if we can appreciate this is to allow the grower/producer to get a fair price then it is worth a small sacrifice on our part. By world standards we are rich – the quality and variety of goods we have available to us is amazing, so it’s only ‘fair’ we keep others in mind when we make our choices.

Hopefully many support Fairtrade shopping all the year round, not just for a fortnight, but we are encouraged to make a special effort during the fortnight, and to promote the cause to those around us.

At Holy Saviour’s we will be giving it a special focus on the middle Sunday of the fortnight

NB Fairtrade baking

Please bring along some cakes/biscuits/scones where

We shall serve them along with our fairly-traded coffee and tea (as always) and if we have ample contributions some will be available to purchase for your Sunday tea!

Please start hunting out some exciting recipes!

Book recycling
scheme (at the back
of church)

This has been in operation for several
years now and has been well used.
However, we are aware that it could do
with some fresh stock and in December some
books were cleared out to make way for ‘new’
ones.
Please look along your shelves at home and
see what you might bring for other people to
enjoy reading. We are not able to leave out a money-box for contributions, so please either put any you may wish to give in with the collection at a service or take it to the parish
